Well, as the following lottery loser will prove, it’s not as simple as that!
Michael Carroll, England
Known an as the “Lotto Lout” when he won £9.7m in the UK in 2002, this 19 year old went bankrupt within eight years of hitting the jackpot! The thuggish-looking British binman with criminal record of petty crime blew his money in the most opulent manner.
Cocaine, prostitutes, endless parties, gold chains, tacky tattoos, destruction derbies in the garden of his countryside mansion… and an unwise investment in Scottish football club Glasgow Rangers.
When asked about prostitutes Carroll replied “I’ve slept with over 4000 women. I once slept with more than TWENTY in one day with a mate in Amsterdam.”
The generous giant didn’t spend all the money on himself though saying “I have £4m to family and friends – but some people wanted more and weren’t happy. Others who didn’t any money from me suddenly stopped talking to me. I received hundreds of thousands of begging letters from strangers too.”
By 2010 Carroll had lost all his money, forced to sell his mansion at a huge loss but said: “People always ask what it’s like to lose £9m… but I always tell them, I didn’t lose it, I SPENT IT!”.
On his downward spiral he was twice sent to jail, divorced (always a costly affair!) and even found himself homeless. But that’s not the end of the story.
After spunking his wad in 2013 the self-styled “King of Chavs” eventually found a new career, working in a biscuit factory for £6 per hour. To Carroll’s credit he is still in work and recently the 36 year old has found a new job delivering bags of coal for £10 per hour in Scotland. He doesn’t own a car, doesn’t own a house but say he enjoys his quiet life.
Carroll certainly appears to have found a more contented life and recently said “life isn’t all about money. It sounds crazy but I’ve never been happier since I returned to work. Going broke is the best thing that ever happened to me, and believe me, I had a great time doing it!”
